Saudi Astronauts to Embark on Historic Journey to International Space Station

Saudi Arabia’s inaugural space mission is scheduled for launch on May 21, featuring the Kingdom’s first astronauts, Ali al-Qarni and Rayyanah Barnawi, the first Arab Muslim female astronaut.

The mission will take place aboard the International Space Station and is considered a significant moment for the Kingdom. Initially delayed, the mission will now proceed as planned.

The astronauts will conduct 14 ground breaking scientific experiments in microgravity, contributing to the exploration of space. Additionally, they will engage with 12,000 Saudi students through live feeds for educational awareness experiments.

The mission aims to enhance Saudi Arabia’s global standing in space exploration and support local research centres while making a scientific impact on future space endeavours. Achieving this milestone will place the Kingdom among the select few countries to have two astronauts simultaneously on the International Space Station.

Launched in September 2022, the Saudi astronauts’ program aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals, focusing on advancing space research, providing quality education and training programs, participating in scientific experiments, international research collaborations, and preparing for future space missions.
